Most homeowners schedule chimney sweeps on an annual calendar — but sometimes your chimney will tell you it needs attention before your next scheduled appointment. Here are five signs that you should call a chimney sweep sooner rather than later.
If smoke is entering your living space when you use the fireplace, something is wrong with the draft. This can be caused by creosote buildup restricting the flue, a blockage (animal nest, debris), a closed or stuck damper, or a pressure issue in the home. Any of these warrant a professional inspection. Don't continue using the fireplace until the cause is identified.
A clean chimney has very little smell. If you notice a strong, unpleasant odor — particularly in warm weather or when the air conditioning is running — it's usually a sign of creosote buildup. Creosote has a distinctive tar-like smell that becomes more noticeable when humidity is high or when negative pressure in the home draws air down the flue. This smell is a reliable indicator that it's time for a sweep.
Look up into your firebox with a flashlight. A small amount of gray ash is normal. But if you see thick, black, shiny, or flaky deposits on the firebox walls or the damper, that's creosote — and it needs to be removed. Stage 2 and Stage 3 creosote are particularly visible and particularly dangerous.
A properly functioning chimney creates a strong upward draft that pulls combustion gases out of your home. If your fires are hard to start, burn sluggishly, or produce more smoke than usual, a restricted flue is a likely culprit. Creosote buildup, a blocked flue, or a damaged damper can all reduce draft significantly.
This one is simple: if you can't remember the last time your chimney was swept, it's time. The NFPA recommends annual inspection and cleaning as needed. Even if you don't use your fireplace frequently, chimneys can develop moisture damage, animal nesting, and other issues that are only caught during a professional inspection.
Chimney fires are fast, hot, and often silent. Many homeowners don't know they've had one until a subsequent inspection reveals cracked tiles or a warped liner. Annual sweeping and prompt attention to warning signs are the best ways to keep your chimney — and your home — safe.
